Electric vehicles have rewritten the locksmith playbook. Tesla key cards, Rivian credit-card keys, and Ford's phone-as-a-key on the F-150 Lightning all require different programming approaches than traditional transponder keys. Here's what a Fort Collins locksmith can — and can't — do for your EV.
Tesla Model 3, Y, S, X — Key Card + Phone Key
Tesla uses NFC key cards (the thin plastic credit-card-style key) and an optional phone key via the Tesla app. Locksmith can: provide and pair new NFC key cards on-site ($165-$245 per card including pairing). Locksmith can NOT: bypass Tesla account requirements — the OWNER must authorize new keys via the touchscreen using an existing key (phone or card). We've done 28 Tesla key pairings in Fort Collins since 2021. Visit /automotive-locksmith/tesla/ for full pricing.
Rivian R1T, R1S — Credit-Card Key + Fob
Rivian uses an NFC credit-card key (similar to Tesla) PLUS an optional rechargeable proximity fob. Locksmith can: pair new credit-card keys on-site. Locksmith can NOT: program new proximity fobs without Rivian service authorization (Rivian requires service center for fob enrollment as of 2025). For a lost credit-card key only: $225-$285 in Fort Collins, on-site pairing. For lost fob: Rivian service appointment required.
Ford F-150 Lightning, Mustang Mach-E — Proximity Fob + Phone-as-Key
Ford Lightning and Mach-E use traditional proximity fobs (like a Ford F-150 gas model) PLUS the Ford Pass phone-as-key feature. Locksmith can: program a new proximity fob on-site ($245-$345 depending on options). Locksmith can NOT: enroll the phone-as-key — that's a Ford Pass setup that requires the owner's account on their phone. Good news: programming a new fob deletes lost fobs from the vehicle, which is critical security.
Lucid Air, Cadillac Lyriq — Newer EV Platforms
Lucid Air uses key cards similar to Tesla. Cadillac Lyriq uses proximity fobs similar to GMC Sierra EV. As of early 2026, locksmith programming is partially available — Lucid requires service-center first key, Cadillac is moving toward locksmith-programmable. Call us with VIN — we'll tell you yes/no in 5 minutes.
Chevy Bolt, Nissan Leaf, Hyundai Ioniq 5/6 — Standard Transponder + Proximity
These older or more mainstream EVs use standard transponder + proximity fob systems. FULLY locksmith-programmable on-site in Fort Collins — $195-$325 depending on model and fob type. We do these weekly.
EV-Specific Lockout Considerations
EV lockouts are different from gas-car lockouts in two ways: (1) most EVs have no mechanical key cylinder, so traditional slim-jim/wedge entry is the only option, and (2) high-voltage battery placement means we cannot drill or pry in certain areas. We use door-seal wedges + reach tools only. No drilling, no scratching the paint. Tesla, Rivian, Lightning, Mach-E lockouts: $115-$165 inside Fort Collins.
Phone-as-Key Warning
If you rely on phone-as-key (Tesla, Ford Pass, BMW Digital Key), CARRY A PHYSICAL BACKUP. Phone battery dies, phone gets stolen, app glitches, NFC reader fails — and you're stranded. Every EV owner should have at least one physical card or fob as backup. We charge $185-$245 to add a physical backup key to any EV.
