Key Fob Programming Fort Collins — Smart Key, Push-to-Start, All Makes On-Site

Modern car key fobs combine three functions in one shell: the cut metal blade for the door cylinder, the transponder chip that authorizes the engine to start (anti-theft), and the radio-frequency remote that operates lock/unlock/trunk/panic from a distance. We program all three on-site in Fort Collins for 25+ vehicle makes — typically in 30-60 minutes at your location. Dealer charges $300-$600 plus appointment delays; we're at your driveway in 22-30 minutes for $85-$380.

Types of fobs we program on-site

Standard transponder + remote: early 2000s onward, most domestic and Asian vehicles. Flip / switchblade fobs: folding blade with separate transponder + remote. Proximity smart keys (push-to-start): Toyota Smart Key, Honda HSK, Ford Intelligent Access, GM Passive Entry, Tesla card/phone, etc. Slot-insertion smart keys: older European luxury (Mercedes pre-2016, BMW pre-2016, Audi advanced key). OEM vs high-spec aftermarket: we offer both, with full functionality on either. We stock the most common fob shells, blanks, and electronics for Fort Collins-area vehicles — Ford, Toyota, Honda, Chevy, Subaru, Tesla, BMW, Mercedes.

When to program a new fob

(1) You lost a fob and want to make sure the missing one can no longer start the vehicle — we reset the immobilizer to clear the lost fob's memory and program the new one. (2) You bought a used vehicle and want a fresh set of fobs (all-keys-reset). (3) The original fob is broken or non-functional (worn buttons, water damage, battery contact corrosion). (4) You want a spare to keep at home for backup. (5) The battery in the fob can't hold a charge anymore — sometimes a shell swap with electronics transfer fixes it cheaper than a full replacement.

Fob shell replacement vs full fob replacement

Shell replacement ($40-$90 + your existing electronics transferred): when your fob's external case is broken (cracked, water-damaged, buttons worn) but the internal circuit board and transponder are fine. We open the fob, transfer the electronics into a new shell, and your fob works again. Common scenario after years of use or a drop. Full fob replacement ($85-$380 depending on type): when the electronics themselves have failed (water damage past the seal, circuit board cracked, transponder chip dead). New fob includes new shell, new electronics, fresh programming.

Common Key Fob Programming Scenarios

Real situations we handle multiple times per week from our Fort Collins base.

  • Lost car fob — new fob programmed + old fob disabled
  • Worn buttons on existing fob — shell replacement with electronics transfer
  • Push-to-start fob battery dead — battery + reprogram if needed
  • Spare fob for the family (second working fob)
  • Bought a used car — all-keys-reset for fresh fobs
  • Water-damaged fob from washing machine / pool / lake
  • Fob falling out of pocket on hiking trail (Horsetooth, Foothills)
  • Tesla Key Card pairing (instead of physical fob)
  • European luxury (BMW, Mercedes, Audi) advanced key fob
  • Aftermarket fob from eBay / Amazon — cut + program only
  • Remote-start fob upgrade for older vehicle
  • Stolen vehicle recovered — disable old fobs, program new

FAQ — Key Fob Programming

Common Questions

Can you program a fob I bought online?+
Yes, as long as it's the correct OEM or high-quality aftermarket fob for your specific make, model, and year. Bring it (or have it shipped to your address before our visit) and we'll cut and program it for $75-$150 less than supplying the fob ourselves.
How long does fob programming take?+
Most vehicles: 30-60 minutes from arrival to working fob. European luxury vehicles (BMW, Mercedes pre-2016) can take 90-120 minutes due to anti-theft handshake requirements.
Do I need to bring my old fob?+
If you still have a working fob, bring it — programming is significantly faster (often half the time). If all keys are lost, we can still program a new fob but the process takes longer and costs more.
Is your work same as the dealer?+
Yes — functionally identical. Same OEM or high-spec aftermarket hardware, same programming process, same full functionality (lock, unlock, panic, trunk, push-to-start, remote-start where applicable). Typically 40-60% lower price than dealer.
My fob battery is dead — do I need to reprogram after replacing?+
Usually no — replacing the battery doesn't erase programming on most fobs. We do battery replacements + verify the fob still pairs ($15-$25). If after the battery swap the fob doesn't communicate, we re-pair it.
Can you fix water damage to my fob?+
Depends on severity. Surface water (rain, splash) usually doesn't damage the circuit. Submerged fob (washing machine, pool, lake): we open the fob, dry/clean the circuit, test electronics. Sometimes salvageable for $40-$80. Heavy corrosion = full replacement.
What about Tesla — do you handle their key cards and fobs?+
Yes. Key Card pairing ($75-$150) — the thin plastic NFC card most Tesla owners use. Key Fob ($180-$380) — the optional Model S-shaped remote. Both paired on-site via the Tesla touchscreen authentication flow.
Do you handle remote-start fobs?+
Yes — both factory-integrated remote-start (Ford, GM, Toyota) and aftermarket remote-start (Compustar, Viper, etc.). Factory: $85-$180 to program. Aftermarket: depends on the system already installed.
