Your key turns in the ignition (or your push-to-start fob lights up the dash) but the engine won't crank. The lights work, the radio works, the dash icons illuminate โ€” but it just won't start. This is one of the most frustrating automotive failures because it doesn't fit the "dead battery" mental model. Here are the 6 most common causes we see in Fort Collins, ordered from most to least common, with what each costs to fix.

First, what's actually happening?

When you turn a modern car key, four things have to align for the engine to crank: (1) the metal blade has to be cut correctly to align the ignition cylinder's wafers, (2) the transponder chip in the key has to exchange a coded handshake with the immobilizer, (3) the ignition switch has to detect the rotation and send a "start" signal, and (4) the starter relay has to receive that signal and engage the starter motor. If ANY of these four steps fails, the engine won't crank โ€” even though your battery is full and everything else electrically works.

Cause #1: Anti-theft (immobilizer) fault โ€” ~40% of cases we see

The transponder chip in the key fob is supposed to authenticate to the immobilizer every time you try to start. If the chip is damaged, the antenna ring around the ignition cylinder is faulty, or the immobilizer module itself has had a software glitch, the handshake fails and the car refuses to crank. Symptoms: security light blinks rapidly on dash, "Key not detected" message, or just nothing happens when you turn the key.

Cost to fix in Fort Collins: $80-$200 mobile diagnostic + $100-$350 repair depending on root cause. If the immobilizer module itself is dead, repair shifts to $400-$900+ (dealer territory). We can determine which on-site in 20-40 minutes.

Cause #2: Worn ignition cylinder โ€” ~25% of cases

Years of turning the same key in the same cylinder wear the brass wafers inside. Eventually they no longer rotate freely, or the spring tension is gone, or the cylinder won't return to "off" position. Symptoms: key turns mushy, won't return, gets stuck, or rotates without engaging anything.

Cost to fix: $100-$200 to rebuild the cylinder internals on-site, or $200-$350 to swap in a new cylinder rekeyed to your existing key. We carry common cylinders for Ford, Chevy, Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Hyundai, and Subaru in stock.

Cause #3: Push-to-start fob battery โ€” ~15% of cases

If your car uses a proximity fob (push-button start, no physical key slot), the fob has its own internal battery that powers the radio signal to the car. When that battery dies, the car can't detect the fob and refuses to start โ€” but everything else electrically works because the car's own battery is fine. Symptoms: dash icon shows "No key detected" or "Key battery low" warning a few weeks before total failure.

Cost to fix: Most fobs use a CR2032 battery โ€” $15-$25 to replace including labor if we're already on-site. As a DIY: any drugstore or hardware store carries CR2032s, and most fobs pop open with a coin slot or small screw.

Workaround if you're stuck: Most push-to-start cars have a backup mode โ€” hold the fob directly against a marked spot on the steering column (usually a key icon) and the car will read it via NFC even if the radio is dead. Then press brake + start. Check your owner's manual for the exact location.

Cause #4: Broken or fragmenting key โ€” ~8% of cases

If your key has been used for many years, especially with a heavy keychain hanging off it (the worst thing for ignition health), the metal blade can develop micro-cracks. Eventually it can snap, with one half stuck inside the cylinder. Symptoms: key won't go fully in, won't turn, OR turns but feels different than usual.

Cost to fix: $80-$150 for broken-key extraction from the ignition cylinder. We use thin spiral extractors that remove the fragment without damaging the wafers. If you need a new key cut (which you probably will), add $30-$120 depending on whether it's a standard key or transponder.

Cause #5: Ignition switch (electrical) failure โ€” ~7% of cases

The ignition switch is a separate component from the ignition cylinder โ€” the cylinder is the mechanical part you turn, the switch is the electrical part behind it that sends signals to the rest of the car. Switches fail from age, electrical wear, or moisture intrusion. Symptoms: key turns smoothly but absolutely nothing happens electrically, or dash flickers, or accessories work but starter doesn't.

Cost to fix: $150-$400 for switch replacement, including labor. This sometimes requires removing the steering column trim and is a longer job (90 minutes typical).

Cause #6: Steering wheel locked โ€” ~5% of cases

If you parked with the wheel turned and pulled the key, the steering lock pin can engage tightly enough that the ignition cylinder can't rotate. Symptoms: key goes in, but won't turn at all. Total stiffness.

Cost to fix: $0 if you know the trick. While trying to turn the key, gently rotate the steering wheel side to side โ€” usually within 5-10 seconds the lock releases and the key turns. If that doesn't work, call us; sometimes the pin is jammed and needs more advanced work ($100-$200).

What we do on a typical "won't start" call in Fort Collins

Mobile dispatch from S Shields St, average arrival 20-35 minutes anywhere in Fort Collins city limits. On arrival, we run through a quick diagnostic:

  1. Check battery voltage (rule out the obvious)
  2. Check key cuts and visual condition
  3. Check transponder communication using a scan tool
  4. Check ignition cylinder rotation
  5. Check ignition switch electrical output
  6. Check fob battery if proximity-style

This entire diagnostic takes 15-30 minutes and runs $80-$120. From there we quote the specific repair. Most jobs are completed on-site the same visit. The exceptions are immobilizer module failures (sometimes requires dealer programming) and severely damaged ignition switches that need parts ordering.

Vehicles we handle on-site for "won't start" calls

Full list on our automotive locksmith hub โ€” 25+ makes including all the common ones (Ford, Chevy, Ram, GMC, Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Subaru, Hyundai, Kia, Jeep, Dodge) plus luxury (BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Lexus, Jaguar) and EVs (Tesla, Rivian).

When to skip the locksmith and call a tow

If you've ruled out anti-theft / immobilizer / key / ignition cylinder via the steps above, and the engine is still not cranking, you may be dealing with a starter motor or starter solenoid failure. That's mechanic territory โ€” not locksmith. We can tell you on-site within 15 minutes whether you need us or a tow to a mechanic, and we won't charge for that diagnostic phone call.
