How we replaced the only key card and paired a phone-key for a 2020 Tesla Model 3 customer in Fort Collins — bypassing the Denver Tesla service center 2-week wait.
David R. (Harmony Corridor, Fort Collins) lost the single key card to his 2020 Model 3. Tesla service in Denver had a 2-week wait for an appointment, plus a $300 service-center fee on top of the $175 card cost — total $475 and 14 days without his car. Phone key was paired but he wanted physical backups for his teenage daughter (under 18 = no phone key).
Confirmed David is the registered owner via Tesla app login (we never log in for the customer — they log in themselves on their device). This is critical: a locksmith should NEVER ask for a Tesla account password.
From the Tesla touchscreen: Controls → Locks → Add Key. Vehicle enters pairing mode.
Touched the new card to the center console NFC reader. Vehicle prompted to authenticate — David used his already-paired phone key to authorize.
Repeated for a second card (for David's wife). Total time for both pairings: 11 minutes.
Confirmed both cards start the vehicle. Showed David how to use the card to unlock/start in case the phone key fails or his phone dies on a road trip.
Tesla key card replacement is mechanically simple — but most locksmiths refuse Tesla work because they don't understand the pairing flow requires the customer to authorize via the touchscreen. We've done 28 Tesla key pairings (Model 3, Model Y, Model S) since 2021.
If you have a Tesla and only the phone key paired, get at least two physical key cards as backup. Your phone WILL die at a bad moment — at altitude, in cold weather, with a low battery. We carry OEM key cards in every van.
